Slave Ownership

In 1816, the Cape Colony Slave Registers were set up, by District[10]. This was to prevent free Khoi/San and 'apprenticed' people freed from slave trading ships, to be enslaved at the cape. Also to protect slaves from bad treatment, and to prepare for abolition that would finally come in 1834/38.
  • Jacob de Vos registered 17 slaves in Folio V17[11].
  • One single slave, Bientang, a "taylor", was shared among the following siblings: Pieter Jacobus de Vos, Philippus, Dirk, Jacob, Wouter, Margaretha Jacoba, married to Daniel Retief. Bientang was registered in Folio V92[12]. One may probably conclude that these people lived near enough to share this one tailer, which means they were probably all in the Hex River Valley, where Pieter Jacobus seems to have farmed.
